এক বছরেরও বেশি সময় ধরে জাতীয় দলের বাইরে তামিম ইকবাল। আদৌ তিনি ফিরবেন কিনা, কিংবা অবসর নিচ্ছেন কিনা; সেই ধোঁয়াশা কাটেনি। এরই মধ্যে গুঞ্জন ছড়িয়ে পড়ে, চ্যাম্পিয়ন্স ট্রফিতে দেখা যেতে পারে তামিমকে। আসলেই কি তামিম চ্যাম্পিয়ন্স ট্রফি দিয়ে জাতীয় দলে ফিরবেন? বাংলাদেশ দলের সাবেক অধিনায়ক কদিন আগে বিপিএলের ম্যাচের পর ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছিলেন, জাতীয় দল নিয়ে আর ভাবছেন না। চ্যাম্পিয়ন্স ট্রফিতে খেলার ব্যাপারে বিসিবির পক্ষ থেকে তার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হয়নি, তিনিও নিজ থেকে যোগাযোগ করেননি; এমনটাই জানিয়েছিলেন তামিম।
তারপরও দেশসেরা ওপেনারকে চ্যাম্পিয়ন্স ট্রফির দলে দেখার অপেক্ষায় ভক্ত-সমর্থকরা। এরই মধ্যে তামিম আরও একবার ইঙ্গিত দিলেন, জাতীয় দলে আর ফেরার সম্ভাবনা নেই। পাকিস্তানের সাবেক তারকা অলরাউন্ডার শহীদ আফ্রিদির একটি ইউটিউব ব্লগে এমন কথা বলতে শোনা গেছে তামিমকে।
আফ্রিদি তামিমকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলেন, ‘তুমি কি একেবারেই অবসর নিয়ে নিয়েছো?’ জবাবে তামিম বলেন, ‘জাতীয় দল থেকে। জাতীয় দলে আর খেলছি না।’ পরে একপর্যায়ে তামিমও আফ্রিদিকে জিজ্ঞেস করেন, তার রাজনীতিতে আসার কোনো সম্ভাবনা আছে কিনা! জবাবে পাক কিংবদন্তি মজা করে উত্তর দেন, ‘আরে তোমাদের অবস্থা তো দেখছি, আমি (রাজনীতিতে) আসছি না।’
